Flee the Wrath to Come!

Why is it that we hear very little warnings about fleeing the wrath the come? After all, the gospels start with such an exhortation and strong warning.

John Bunyan’s wonderful allegory, Pilgrim’s Progress, starts out with Evangelist warning Christian to “flee the wrath to come.”

Who’s wrath? Why so wrathful? These questions are worth answering.Flee the Wrath to Come!

Blissfully Blind

Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?” He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?” And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you.” Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” And he worshiped Him. And Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.” Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him, “Are we blind also?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.” (John 9:35-41)

Belief in Jesus as Son of Almighty Father God requires, no demands one’s admission of their own spiritual blindness. Why is it that the Pharisees (and most Jews at that time) couldn’t “handle the Truth” of God in Christ Jesus? They were blinded by the light of their glory; their own ways, and their  wisdom.

Amazingly, spiritual blindness is most always accompanied with the blind claiming to have near perfect eyesight! This is what Jesus was referring to: their unwillingness to recognize Him as the Son of God coupled with their stubborn continuance in denying their spiritual blindness.Blissfully Blind

Don’t refuse Him Who speaks from Heaven

In plain sight of Jesus His heavenly Father audibly commended Jesus, His Son, and gave the disciples a direct command by saying:

And a cloud came and overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!”… (Mark 9:7-8)

…a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were fearful as they entered the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Luke 9:34-35)

The Spirit of Christ has been sent to teach us the Way of Christ. We have Jesus’ words – His teachings – perfectly preserved in the Gospels and testified in of in the letters of the Apostles. What will we do with Jesus? And what we will do with what Jesus commanded?

Will we “hear Him” today?Don’t refuse Him Who speaks from Heaven
